The straight black men showed their support for gay rights in our blog post Black, Straight & Against Hate – so, we wanted to point to a black woman that’s standing up for gay rights. One woman making strides in the world of politics is newly elected San Francisco Supervisor Malia Cohen.
In a recent article in The Bay Area Reporter, Supervisor Cohen says that she wants to serve as a bridge builder between the LGBT and African American communities. She goes on to say that the bonds between these communities can help us win marriage equality if it goes to the ballot in 2012. She worked as former Mayor Gavin Newsom’s confidential assistant seven years ago and assisted with the thousands of same-sex couples seeking to get married after Newsom’s surprise decision to allow the gay nuptials to take place.
“When we start to tap into the African American experience within the LGBT community, life starts to grow and it becomes less about white men solely anchored in the Castro and becomes more of a collective movement that incorporates everyone,” said Cohen.
