The New York Times just published a story this week called “Parenting by Gays More Common in the South, Census Shows.” The article talks about the latest Census data on gay couples saying… About 32 percent of gay couples in Jacksonville are raising children, while in San Antonio about 34 percent of gay couples are parents. Of this group, about a third of lesbians are parents, and a fifth of gay men have kids.
“Black or Latino gay couples are twice as likely as whites to be raising children…They are also more likely than their white counterparts to be struggling economically.”
It’s a fascinating article because it delves deeper into the issues – saying that many of these gay couples have children from failed heterosexual relationships.

Why is Jacksonville a magnet for these gay families?
The theory is that there are more openly gay parents in Jacksonville because of the gay accepting churches!! Yes, you read that right! Pastor Valerie Williams (pictured below) opened a gay affirming church in Jacksonville and soon saw families with gay parents coming out of the woodwork.
