On this special edition of the award winning webseries NoMoreDownLow.TV, we remember the victims of unsolved murders, attacks and hate crimes in the African American same gender loving community. Our goal is to bring public awareness and hopefully change the culture that leads to these horrific crimes against humanity. During our research, we realized that there are countless stories to be told and our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the victims that we did not mention in this show. Hopefully what we have done is raise awareness of this epidemic of violence that needs to be addressed by everyone.
Featured in this episode are Alvin Beathea and Judean Jones, the parents of JaParker “Deoni” Jones. We’ll hear how they are keeping the memory of their transgender daughter alive. Then we’ll recap the 2005 brutal murder of Rashawn Brazell, and meet the man who’s upcoming documentary promises to chronicle how and why one of New York’s most horrific homicides remains unsolved. And we’ll remember Mitrice Richardson, a former beauty queen from Los Angeles, and the mystery surrounding her disappearance and death. Next, we’ll take you to the candlelight vigils of the recent murders of Islan Nettles and Dominique Newburn, two African American trans women who were murdered the week in August, 2013, and hear actor/trans advocate Laverne Cox’s public appeal for justice for the trans community. From Atlanta, we’ll look back at the murder of gay club owner and promoter Durand Robinson, who was not gay, and how his death continues to reverberate throughout Atlanta’s black same gender loving community. And finally, we’ll hear from transgender advocates who participated in the National Black Justice Coalition’s “Out On The Hill” LGBT Leadership Conference during the Congressional Black Caucus Weekend in 2011, lobbying on Capitol Hill for justice for transgender people of color.
