NoMoreDownLow.TV is proud to post these two new videos in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: The first is an all-new segment from the Kingdom Day Parade on Monday; the second segment takes a look back at the historic LGBT reception and dedication of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial in Washington, D.C., including special recognition for Bayard Rustin, Dr. King’s trusted openly gay advisor that was a leader in organizing the March on Washington.
The Barbara Jordan/ Bayard Rustin Coalition organized the Black Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Same Gender Loving Community to participate in events throughout Martin Luther King weekend, culminating in marching together in the Kingdom Day Parade – one of the country’s largest MLK Day parades. More photos are at the end of this post (and on Flickr). WATCH NOW:
At the parade, NoMoreDownLow.TV talks to Imani Tolliver of the HERE TO STAY COALITION. She talks to us about the importance of being visible in the black community. While Andre Molette of the Jordan Rustin Coalition speaks about taking pride in being both black and gay.
In the second video (below), NoMoreDownLow.TV exclusively covered the LGBT celebration of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial. Community leaders and activists converged for the “Building the Dream for LGBT Equality” dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial.
Featured in the video segment are community leaders talking about how Martin Luther King Jr.’s message resonates with the LGBT movement. Sharon Lettman-Hicks, executive director of the National Black Justice Coalition said at the event, “We must be proud enough to claim that we are a part of the civil rights movement. And dare anyone to challenge us on that.”
Gay activists who participated on the historic March on Washington were also recognized at the event.
The evening concluded with a push to honor Dr. King’s trusted openly gay advisor Bayard Rustin with a postage stamp.
