HIV rates increase by half among young gay, bisexual black men

The Centers for Disease Control released distrubing information this afternoon.  There has been a signficient increase in the number of HIV and syphilis cases.

The increase over a three year period could be due to:

• Contracting HIV is no longer a death sentence
• Lack of HIV education which can lead to making risky decisions
• The perception that masculine men are healthy and HIV-negative

Some of  the reasons for not being tested for HIV are:

• denial
•  homophobia
• not being able to afford HIV testing

This year the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will be working with community health centers getting out the message on HIV testing and prevention
