Ghana’s Western Regional Minister Paul Evans Aidoo has ordered all gays to be rounded-up and arrested according to the Sydney Star Observer. Aidoo has called upon Ghana’s Bureau of National Investigations and security forces to round up the country’s gay population and has even asked landlords and tenants to tell them about people they suspect of being in same-sex relationships. “All efforts are being made to get rid of these people in the society,” Aidoo said.
Homosexuality is currently a misdemeanor in Ghana, but President John Evans Atta Mills has denied plans to institute a new, stronger anti-gay law. This move by Aidoo follows months of campaigning by the Christian Council of Ghana which last week called on Ghanaians not to vote for any politician who believes in gay rights.
Muslims and Christians in the Western Region have been staging protests ever since a local media report claimed there were around 8000 homosexuals and lesbians in the district.
