Black History Month with a gay curve ball.  As we celebrate Black History Month, we’re going to focus on the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender members of the black community.  Glenn Burke is a gay black hero that our community needs to know about.  And the documentary “Out: The Glenn Burke Story” (broadcast on Comcast SportsNet in November), reminded us that we need more people to hear about this incredible man and his remarkable story.

Glenn Burke is a legend in Major League Baseball.  His sports career led him into professional baseball with the Los Angeles Dodgers, being hailed by one coach as “the next Willie Mays.” And today, he is still considered the inventor of the “high five.”

He was later blackballed out of the game because he was gay. But he was more than out of the closet. When he was offered a bonus to marry a woman, he defiantly said no and was even openly dating Dodger manager Tommy Lasorda‘s son.  Tommy Lasorda!  Learn more by watching the preview below…
